The LTC3789 is a high performance synchronous buck-boost switching regulator controller from Analog Devices that operates from input voltages above, below, or equal to the output voltage. The topology uses four N-channel MOSFET switches in a full-bridge configuration, controlled by a current-mode architecture that provides fast transient response and easy loop stabilization. The device incorporates an internal low dropout regulator (LDO) that powers the gate drivers from VIN or from an external supply via the EXTVCC pin for improved efficiency. The LTC3789 also features programmable switching frequency, adjustable soft-start, and input/output average current limiting, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of power conversion applications.

The LTC3789 employs a 4-switch synchronous buck-boost topology with current-mode control. When VIN is significantly higher than VOUT, the controller operates in buck mode, using the high-side switch TG1 and synchronous switch BG1 to step down the voltage. When VIN is significantly lower than VOUT, it operates in boost mode, using TG2 and BG2 to step up the voltage. When VIN is close to VOUT, the controller seamlessly transitions through buck-boost mode, utilizing all four switches. The current-mode architecture senses the inductor current through an external sense resistor and compares it with the error amplifier output to determine the switch duty cycle. This provides inherent line rejection, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and simplified loop compensation.
