The KSZ8794CNXIC from Microchip Technology is a fully integrated 4-port 10/100 Ethernet switch designed for managed networking in industrial and embedded applications. It features three 10/100 PHY ports with integrated magnetics-compatible drivers and one MII/RMII MAC port for direct connection to an MCU or SoC. The switch fabric provides non-blocking wire-speed forwarding across all ports, while advanced features including 802.1Q VLAN, 4-queue QoS, IGMP snooping, and MIB statistics enable managed network functionality without an external management processor.

The KSZ8794CNXIC implements a store-and-forward Ethernet switch architecture. Each PHY port includes a 10/100 MAC, an 8B/10B encoder/decoder, and a DSP-based transceiver that handles auto-negotiation, auto-MDIX, and signal conditioning. Received frames are stored in the shared packet buffer, examined by the address lookup engine (which maintains a 1K-entry MAC address table), and forwarded to the appropriate output port(s). VLAN tagging/untagging is performed based on port VLAN configuration. The QoS engine classifies frames into 4 priority queues per output port using 802.1p priority, DSCP, or port-based rules. IGMP snooping intercepts IGMP queries and reports to build multicast group membership tables, forwarding multicast traffic only to ports with interested receivers.
