The AD536AJHZ is a true RMS-to-DC converter from Analog Devices, functionally identical to the AD536AJDZ but packaged in a 20-lead LCC (Leadless Chip Carrier) for surface-mount assembly in high-reliability applications. The device computes the true root-mean-square value of any complex input waveform including distorted sine waves, noise, and pulse trains. With a crest factor capability of 7:1, it accurately handles high-peak-to-RMS ratio signals common in SCR-controlled power systems and switched-mode power supplies. The built-in output buffer and dB output option make it versatile for both direct RMS measurement and logarithmic level indication.

The AD536AJHZ uses an implicit RMS computation method: Vrms = Avg(Vin²/Vrms). The input signal passes through an absolute value circuit into a squarer/divider that computes Vin²/Vrms. This result is averaged by an internal or external filter, and the averaged output feeds back to the divider. The loop converges when the average of Vin²/Vrms equals Vrms. The output buffer provides the DC RMS voltage, while a separate dB output circuit generates a logarithmic representation. The LCC package provides a hermetic seal and superior thermal characteristics compared to plastic DIP, making it suitable for harsh environments and military applications.
