The device uses a simple 3-wire (U/D, CS, INC) serial interface to increment or decrement the wiper position. A key feature is the non-volatile storage of the wiper position: the setting is automatically stored when CS goes high and recalled on the next power-up, eliminating the need for external storage. The resistor terminals can handle signals from -5V to +5V, enabling use in split-rail analog circuits. With low wiper resistance of 40Ohm typical and operating from 2.7V to 5.5V logic supply, the X9C103SIZT1 is ideal for programmable gain, calibration, and adjustment circuits.

The X9C103SIZT1 operates as a digitally controlled resistor divider. Key subsystems include: (1) Resistor Array – a series string of 99 equal resistors totaling 10kOhm, with 100 tap points between resistors and at the ends; (2) Wiper Switch Array – CMOS analog switches connect the wiper terminal (VW) to one of the 100 tap points, selected by the stored wiper register value; (3) 3-Wire Interface – CS (chip select), INC (increment clock), and U/D (up/down direction) control the wiper movement; each INC pulse moves the wiper one position in the direction set by U/D; (4) Non-Volatile Storage – the wiper position is stored in EEPROM when CS transitions high; on power-up, the last stored position is recalled; (5) Terminal Buffers – the VH, VL, and VW terminals can handle signals from -5V to +5V independent of the logic supply.
