The TNY280PN from Power Integrations is a TinySwitch-III series energy-efficient off-line switcher integrating a 700V power MOSFET, oscillator, high-voltage switched current source, current limit, and thermal shutdown into a single DIP-8 package. Using a simple ON/OFF control scheme that eliminates the need for loop compensation, it provides constant efficiency down to very light loads. The device supports up to 20W in enclosed adapter applications at 230VAC and 14W at universal input. Selectable current limit via the BYPASS/MULTI-FUNCTION pin capacitor extends power capability for peak loads.

The TNY280PN operates using ON/OFF control rather than traditional PWM. At the start of each 132 kHz switching cycle, the EN/UV pin is sampled. If the pin is high (output below regulation), the internal MOSFET is turned on and remains on until the current ramps to the current limit. If the pin is low, the cycle is skipped. This naturally regulates output voltage without error amplifier compensation. A state machine adjusts the current limit based on the pattern of enabled/skipped cycles: full current limit at heavy loads, reduced at lighter loads. Frequency jittering (±4 kHz) spreads EMI energy to simplify filter design. The internal thermal shutdown activates at approximately 142C.
