The LNK616DG-TL is an offline switcher IC from Power Integrations in SMD-8 (DIP-8 footprint, surface mount), designed for 9W flyback power supplies operating from 85-265VAC universal input. It integrates a 700V N-channel power MOSFET, a PWM controller, and auto-restart protection in a single monolithic IC. The device uses a constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV) control scheme: in constant-voltage mode, the FB pin receives current from an optocoupler, and the controller adjusts the switching frequency to regulate the output voltage. In constant-current mode (during startup or overload), the primary peak current is limited to a fixed value, providing a constant output current. The controller uses a variable-frequency on/off control: at light load, the switch turns on and off at low frequency (several kHz), reducing switching losses; at full load, the frequency increases to approximately 85kHz. This eliminates the need for a minimum load resistor, achieving less than 30mW no-load consumption (meeting Energy Star and EU CoC Tier 2 requirements). The BP pin provides the 5.85V internal supply; a 0.1uF capacitor on BP sets the auto-restart timing: if the FB pin current drops below threshold (indicating output overvoltage or open loop), the device enters auto-restart, cycling on and off at 6Hz to limit average power dissipation. The 700V MOSFET has typical RDS(on) of 25 ohms, and the maximum peak drain current is 600mA. The SMD-8 package provides 7mm creepage between drain and source pins. The -DG-TL suffix specifies SMD-8, tape-and-reel, lead-free.
