The TL431AQDBZR operates as a precision shunt regulator: (1) Reference Comparison: An internal bandgap reference of approximately 2.495V is compared with the voltage at the REF pin. When VREF exceeds Vref (2.495V), the cathode (K) conducts current from cathode to anode (A), pulling VKA down. When VREF is below Vref, the cathode current is essentially zero (off-state, 0.1uA typical). (2) Output Voltage Setting: Two external resistors R1 (top) and R2 (bottom) form a voltage divider from VKA to ground. The REF pin connects to the junction: VREF = VKA x R2/(R1+R2). Setting VREF = Vref gives VKA = Vref x (1 + R1/R2). This allows VKA to be set to any value from Vref to 36V. (3) Shunt Regulation: The device acts as a shunt element, conducting more or less current to maintain VREF at Vref. The 0.2 ohm dynamic impedance (at low frequency) ensures tight regulation. The 1mA to 100mA operating cathode current range provides wide regulation authority. (4) Power Supply Feedback: In switching power supplies, the TL431 compares the output voltage (via resistor divider) with its internal reference and drives an optocoupler LED to provide feedback to the primary side controller. The sharp turn-on characteristic and high open-loop gain ensure precise output voltage regulation.
