With a 1/8 unit load input impedance, it allows up to 256 nodes on a single bus, four times more than standard 1/4 unit load transceivers. The device supports data rates up to 50 Mbps, making it suitable for both legacy 9600-baud Modbus networks and high-speed industrial protocols. Bus pins feature +/-16kV ESD protection, and the fail-safe receiver ensures logic-high output when the bus is open or shorted.

The SN65HVD75DR operates as a half-duplex RS-485 transceiver with separate driver and receiver sections. **Driver Section**: When the DE (Driver Enable) pin is high, the differential driver amplifies the TTL-level TXD input into a differential signal on the A and B bus lines. The driver output swing is typically 2.4V differential. When DE is low, the driver outputs are high-impedance, releasing the bus for other nodes. **Receiver Section**: The differential receiver continuously monitors the A-B voltage. When the differential exceeds +200mV, the RXD output is high; when below -200mV, RXD is low. The /RE (Receiver Enable) pin controls whether the receiver output is active or high-impedance. **Fail-Safe**: When the bus is idle (open, shorted, or terminated but not driven), the receiver output defaults to a logic high. This is achieved by an internal bias that ensures the A-B differential exceeds +200mV when the bus is undriven, preventing false start bits. **1/8 Unit Load**: The high input impedance of the receiver (96kOhm typical vs 12kOhm for 1 unit load) reduces bus loading, allowing 256 transceivers on a single bus without exceeding the 32 unit load standard limit. **Hot-Plug**: Internal circuitry ensures that during power-up and power-down transients, the driver and receiver outputs remain in a known high-impedance state, preventing bus disruption when a node is inserted or removed.
