The SN65HVD72DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V CAN bus transceiver compatible with ISO 11898-2 in an 8-pin SOIC package. The 72 in the part number indicates it is part of TI’s next-generation 3.3V CAN transceiver family, offering improved EMC performance and lower bus leakage compared to the earlier SN65HVD230. Operating from a single 3.0V to 3.6V supply, it provides the physical layer interface between the CAN protocol controller and the CAN bus differential pair. The device features +/-16kV HBM ESD protection on bus pins, thermal shutdown, and fault-tolerant design with cross-wire and overvoltage protection. An unpowered node presents high impedance to the bus, not disturbing other nodes.

The SN65HVD72 operates through four subsystems: (1) CAN Transmitter: A differential driver converts the single-ended TXD input to CAN bus differential signals. The driver output meets the ISO 11898-2 specification for dominant and recessive bus states. (2) CAN Receiver: A differential receiver converts the bus signal to a single-ended RXD output. The receiver operates over a -2V to +7V common-mode range with +/-25V transient capability. (3) Mode Control: The RS pin controls the operating mode – high-speed mode (RS=GND), slope-control mode (RS=resistor to GND for EMC optimization), and standby/listen-only mode (RS=HIGH, driver disabled, receiver active at 370uA). (4) Protection: Thermal shutdown disables the driver above 165C. Cross-wire protection, loss-of-ground, and overvoltage protection ensure robustness in harsh industrial environments.
