The DRV8880PWPR from Texas Instruments is a 45V, 2A bipolar stepper motor driver in a 28-pin HTSSOP PowerPAD package. The PWP denotes the HTSSOP-28 PowerPAD package, and R denotes tape and reel (2000 pcs/reel). The device integrates two N-channel MOSFET H-bridge drivers with a microstepping indexer controlled via simple STEP/DIR interface. Smart Tune (formerly AutoTune) automatically adjusts the decay profile for optimal current regulation without manual tuning, compensating for motor variation and aging. The device supports up to 1/16 microstepping with non-circular half-step modes for smoother motion. The configurable off-time PWM chopping (10/20/30us) and adaptive blanking time further optimize stepping performance. A 3.3V/10mA LDO provides power for external logic circuits. Comprehensive protection includes VM undervoltage lockout, logic undervoltage, charge pump undervoltage, overcurrent protection (latched or retry modes), and thermal shutdown with nFAULT fault indication.

The DRV8880 operates through five subsystems: (1) H-Bridge Power Stage: Two N-channel MOSFET H-bridges drive the two phases of a bipolar stepper motor. Each bridge can drive up to 2A full-scale current (1.4A RMS) with proper thermal design. An internal charge pump generates the gate drive voltage above VM to drive the high-side NMOS FETs. (2) Microstepping Indexer: The STEP/DIR interface increments the internal indexer on each STEP rising edge. The indexer generates sinusoidal current references for each phase at the selected step resolution (full, half, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 step). (3) Current Regulation: PWM chopping regulates the winding current to the target set by the indexer. The off-time can be configured to 10, 20, or 30us. The decay mode (slow, fast, mixed, or Smart Tune) determines how current decreases during each PWM cycle. (4) Smart Tune: Automatically selects the optimal decay profile on a step-by-step basis, monitoring the current waveform and adjusting the blanking time and decay ratio. This eliminates the need for manual decay mode tuning and compensates for motor parameter variations. (5) Protection: Multiple fault monitors (VM UVLO, logic UVLO, charge pump UV, OCP, TSD) can trigger the open-drain nFAULT output. OCP can be configured in latched mode (requires nSLEEP toggle) or auto-retry mode.
