The TPSMC36CA is a 36V bidirectional TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode from Littelfuse in SMA (DO-214AC) package, rated at 600W peak pulse power (8/20us waveform). Bidirectional TVS diodes consist of two back-to-back Zener diodes, providing symmetrical clamping for both positive and negative transients. The working voltage (VRWM) is 36V, meaning the diode draws negligible leakage current (<1uA) below this voltage. When a transient exceeds the breakdown voltage (VBR = 40-44.2V), the diode conducts heavily, clamping the voltage to VC (49.9V maximum at 8.9A peak pulse current). The clamping ratio (VC/VBR) is approximately 1.15, meaning the clamped voltage is only 15% above the breakdown voltage, providing tight protection. The -CA suffix indicates bidirectional (C = clamping, A = bidirectional). The 8/20us peak pulse current rating is 8.9A (IPP = PP/VC = 600W/49.9V). The response time is virtually zero (sub-nanosecond), as the TVS is a solid-state avalanche device with no thermal lag. The SMA package provides 60C/W thermal resistance junction-to-lead. The device is used for: (1) CAN bus ESD/surge protection (36V covers 24V truck systems); (2) Industrial 24V power line protection; (3) RS-485 bus protection; (4) Sensor signal line protection. The TPSMC series is the SMA-packaged version of the larger SMC (1500W) and SMB (600W) families.
