The SN65LBC172A16DWR from Texas Instruments is a quadruple RS-485 differential line driver supporting data rates up to 30 Mbps. It features 12 kV ESD protection on bus pins, thermal shutdown, and driver output current limiting for robust operation in industrial environments. The LinBiCMOS process combines bipolar precision with CMOS efficiency. The 16-pin SOIC (DW) package supports standard surface-mount assembly.

Each of the four drivers converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels into differential RS-485/422 signals. The differential output provides high noise immunity for long cable runs. Driver outputs feature current limiting and thermal shutdown for fault protection. The wide -7V to +12V common-mode range allows communication despite ground potential differences between nodes.
