The LM7808CT from Texas Instruments is a fixed 8V positive voltage regulator from the LM78xx series. It provides a stable 8V output at up to 1.5A from an input of 10.5V to 35V. The 8V output is commonly used for analog circuits, relay drives, and as an intermediate voltage for systems that need more than 5V but less than 12V. The 75dB ripple rejection cleans up noisy input supplies. Internal protection includes thermal shutdown and current limiting. The LM7808 shares the same TO-220 pinout and architecture with the LM7805 and LM7812, differing only in the internal resistor divider that sets the output voltage. For lower dropout at 8V, the LM1117-8.0 (1.1V dropout) or AMS1117-8.0 provides better performance in battery-powered applications.

The LM7808CT uses the same NPN pass transistor architecture as other LM78xx regulators. The internal resistor divider is set to produce 8V at the output. The error amplifier compares the divided output to the internal bandgap reference and drives the NPN pass transistor accordingly. The 2V dropout requires a minimum input of 10V for proper regulation. Power dissipation must be managed with a heatsink: at 1A load with 15V input, dissipation is (15-8) x 1 = 7W. The thermal shutdown protects against excessive junction temperature. The current limit of approximately 2.2A and safe-area compensation ensure reliable operation under fault conditions.
