The MAX232ECPE from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) is the industry-standard dual RS-232 driver/receiver that converts between 5V TTL/CMOS logic levels and RS-232 voltage levels (+/-9V typical). The internal charge pump doubles and inverts the 5V supply to generate approximately +/-10V, requiring only 4 external 1uF capacitors for operation. Two drivers convert TTL transmit signals to RS-232 levels, and two receivers convert RS-232 receive signals to TTL levels. The E version provides +/-15kV ESD protection on the RS-232 pins, exceeding the IEC 1000-4-2 requirements. The 120kbps guaranteed data rate supports all standard RS-232 baud rates up to 115.2kbps. The MAX232 is the most recognized RS-232 interface IC and has been the default choice for MCU serial communication since its introduction in 1987.

The MAX232ECPE uses a dual charge pump to generate the positive and negative supply voltages required for RS-232 transmission. The first charge pump (voltage doubler) uses C1 to charge to VCC during one half-cycle and then stacks this voltage on top of VCC during the other half-cycle, producing V+ = 2 x VCC = approximately 10V. The second charge pump (voltage inverter) uses C2 to charge from V+ to ground, then connects C2 between V+ and the V- output, producing V- = approximately -10V. These generated voltages power the two RS-232 drivers. Each driver is an inverting level shifter: a TTL HIGH input produces a negative RS-232 output (approximately -9V), and a TTL LOW input produces a positive RS-232 output (approximately +9V). The receivers are inverting comparators with 0.8V/2.4V thresholds per RS-232 specifications.
