The LM358AP from Texas Instruments is the improved-grade version of the industry-standard LM358 dual operational amplifier. The A suffix indicates tighter input offset voltage specification (2mV typical vs 3mV for the standard grade), making it more suitable for precision applications. Like the standard LM358, it operates from a single supply as low as 3V, with input common-mode range that includes ground and output that swings to ground without a pull-down resistor. This ground-referenced capability makes it ideal for single-supply sensor conditioning circuits. The 1.1MHz GBW and 0.6V/us slew rate are adequate for DC and low-frequency applications. Two independent amplifiers in a single 8-PDIP package provide compact signal processing. The LM358AP is pin-compatible with the LM358, LM258 (military temp), and LM2904 (automotive) versions.

The LM358AP uses a PNP input stage that allows the input common-mode range to extend to ground (0V), a key advantage over many other op-amps that require at least 1-2V headroom. The output stage uses a Darlington NPN pull-up and a common-emitter PNP pull-down. The PNP pull-down allows the output to swing to within a few millivolts of ground in single-supply applications, unlike rail-to-rail op-amps that typically bottom out at 10-50mV. However, the output cannot swing to the positive rail (typically 1.5V below VCC). The 1.1MHz GBW means the open-loop gain drops to unity at 1.1MHz, providing approximately 20dB gain at 110kHz and 40dB gain at 11kHz. The internal compensation capacitor provides stability for closed-loop gains of 1 or higher without external components.
