The LM393AP from Texas Instruments is the improved-grade dual voltage comparator, featuring 1mV typical input offset voltage compared to 2mV for the standard LM393. Two independent comparators with open-collector outputs can sink up to 16mA each, allowing direct connection to logic gates, LEDs, or relay drivers through pull-up resistors. The open-collector outputs support wired-OR connections where multiple comparator outputs share a single pull-up resistor. Operating from 2V to 36V single supply (or +/-1V to +/-18V dual supply), the LM393AP covers virtually all common supply voltages. The input common-mode range includes ground, enabling single-supply operation with ground-referenced signals. The 1.3us response time supports applications up to several hundred kHz. The LM393AP is pin-compatible with the LM393, LM2903 (automotive), and LM193 (military) versions.

The LM393AP comparator continuously compares the voltage at its non-inverting input (+) to the voltage at its inverting input (-). When V+ > V-, the output transistor turns off and the open-collector output floats HIGH (via external pull-up resistor). When V+ < V-, the output transistor turns on and pulls the output LOW. Unlike op-amps, comparators have no internal compensation capacitor, providing much faster response (1.3us vs microseconds for op-amps). However, the lack of compensation means the LM393 cannot be used with negative feedback (it would oscillate). Positive feedback (hysteresis) can be added with a resistor from output to non-inverting input to prevent oscillation near the switching threshold. The open-collector output requires an external pull-up resistor to a voltage that can be different from the comparator supply, enabling level translation.
