The NE555P from Texas Instruments is the iconic industry-standard precision timer IC. Configurable in astable (oscillator) or monostable (one-shot) mode, it generates accurate time delays from microseconds to hours. With 200 mA output drive capability, 4.5-16V supply range, and easy external component configuration, the NE555P remains one of the most versatile and widely used analog ICs for timing, oscillation, and pulse generation applications.

The NE555P contains two comparators, an SR flip-flop, a discharge transistor, and a resistive voltage divider (three 5kΩ resistors in series, hence the name). The voltage divider sets the upper comparator threshold at 2/3 VCC and the lower comparator trigger at 1/3 VCC. In monostable mode, a trigger pulse below 1/3 VCC sets the flip-flop, driving the output HIGH and turning off the discharge transistor. The timing capacitor charges through the external resistor until it reaches 2/3 VCC, which resets the flip-flop. In astable mode, the capacitor charges and discharges between 1/3 and 2/3 VCC continuously, producing a free-running oscillation.
