The SMD050F-2 operates as a polymer-based PTC resettable fuse using a positive temperature coefficient material. **Normal Operation**: Below the hold current (500mA), the PTC element maintains low resistance (0.15 Ohm typical). Current flows normally with minimal voltage drop and power dissipation. **Overcurrent Trip**: When current exceeds the trip threshold (1.0A), resistive heating (I2R) raises the polymer temperature. At the Curie point, the crystalline polymer transitions to an amorphous state, causing the conductive particles embedded in the polymer to separate dramatically. This increases resistance by several orders of magnitude, effectively limiting the fault current to a small leakage value. **Reset Mechanism**: When the fault is removed and the device cools, the polymer recrystallizes and the conductive particles reconnect, restoring low resistance. This self-resetting behavior eliminates the need to replace fuses after overcurrent events. **Time-Current Characteristic**: The trip time depends on the fault current magnitude. At 5x hold current (2.5A), the device trips within 1.5 seconds maximum, providing fast protection for sensitive circuits.
