The L78M10ABDT-TR is a 10V 500mA positive voltage regulator from STMicroelectronics in DPAK (TO-252), the 500mA version of the classic 78xx series. The M-series (500mA) fills the gap between the 100mA 78Lxx (TO-92) and the 1A 78xx (TO-220). The internal architecture uses a bandgap reference, error amplifier, and series-pass NPN transistor. The dropout voltage is 2V at 500mA (VIN must be at least 12V for 10V output). The DPAK (TO-252) package is the surface-mount equivalent of TO-220, with the tab acting as both the electrical GND connection and the primary thermal path. The thermal resistance is 10C/W junction-to-tab, allowing 1.25W dissipation at 25C ambient on a standard 1oz copper pour. The device includes current limiting (700mA), thermal shutdown at 150C, and safe operating area protection. The -AB suffix specifies A-grade (2% output voltage tolerance at 25C). The -DT-TR suffix specifies DPAK (TO-252), tape-and-reel. The 10V output is used in: analog circuit bias (op-amp supplies), relay driver power, and as a pre-regulator for low-noise regulators. In 12V automotive systems, the L78M10 provides a stable 10V rail for analog sensors and reference circuits.
