The L7812CV from ST is a 12V fixed 1.5A positive voltage regulator with internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and 2V typical dropout in TO-220 for linear power supply regulation.

The L7812CV is a 12V fixed positive voltage regulator from ST in TO-220, delivering up to 1.5A output current. It uses a series-pass NPN transistor controlled by a feedback loop: an internal bandgap reference (approximately 7V) is compared against a divided-down version of the output voltage. The error amplifier drives the series-pass transistor to maintain VOUT at 12V +/-2% (for the AB version). The dropout voltage is approximately 2V at 1A, requiring VIN >= 14.5V for proper regulation. Internal protection includes: thermal shutdown at 150C junction temperature, output short-circuit current limiting (typically 2.1A peak), and safe operating area (SOA) protection that limits current when VIN-VOUT differential is large. The device requires external capacitors: 0.33uF on input for stability and 0.1uF on output for transient response. Quiescent current is 5mA typical, which flows regardless of load.
