The BCM5248UA4KQMG is a 10/100 Ethernet PHY transceiver from Broadcom in QFN-40 (P14 revision). It implements the physical layer of the OSI model, connecting the MAC layer to the physical medium via the RGMII (Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface) or MII (Media Independent Interface). The transmitter takes 4-bit parallel data from the RGMII, performs 4B/5B encoding, scrambles the data to reduce EMI, and drives the differential MDI pair (TXP/TXN) through an internal DAC. The receiver recovers clock from the incoming signal using a digital PLL, equalizes the signal to compensate for cable loss, decodes 5B/4B, and presents data to the MAC via RGMII. Auto-negotiation (IEEE 802.3u) exchanges link capabilities with the link partner to select the highest common speed and duplex. The MIIM interface provides register access for configuration and status monitoring, supporting Clause 22 management. Internal loopback modes aid diagnostics.
