The TLP627-2 from Toshiba is a dual-channel Darlington phototransistor photocoupler providing 1000% minimum current transfer ratio at IF=1mA. The Darlington output stage (two cascaded phototransistors) provides the very high CTR needed for applications where the LED drive current is limited, such as microcontroller I/O port direct drive without additional transistor buffering. The 300V collector-emitter voltage rating is suitable for driving triac gates, relay coils, and small solenoids directly from AC line-derived or industrial 24V DC supplies. The dual-channel configuration provides two independent optocouplers in a single 8-pin DIP package, saving board space compared to two single-channel devices. The 5000Vrms isolation voltage meets UL 1577 safety requirements for industrial and appliance applications.

The TLP627-2 operates as a dual Darlington phototransistor photocoupler. (1) Darlington Output: Each channel consists of an infrared LED optically coupled to a Darlington-connected phototransistor pair. The first phototransistor detects the LED light and its collector current drives the base of the second (output) transistor. The total current gain is the product of the individual gains, resulting in CTR values of 1000% or more. (2) High CTR: At IF=1mA, the Darlington output can sink 10mA or more (1000% CTR minimum). This means that a microcontroller I/O pin directly driving the LED at 1-5mA can control loads requiring up to 50-100mA at the output. (3) Speed Trade-off: The Darlington connection introduces an additional pole in the frequency response, limiting the switching speed to approximately 100us. This is acceptable for relay and triac drive applications but not for high-speed digital signal isolation. (4) Saturation Voltage: The Darlington output has a higher saturation voltage (approximately 1.0-1.2V) compared to a single phototransistor (0.1-0.3V) due to the VCE(sat) of the first transistor plus the VBE of the second.
