The TLP290-4GB from Toshiba is a 4-channel photocoupler with phototransistor output in a SO16 package. Each channel consists of a GaAIAs infrared LED optically coupled to a phototransistor, providing 3750Vrms minimum isolation voltage. The GB rank provides 100% minimum current transfer ratio at IF=5mA, while the standard rank provides 50% minimum. The device is suitable for high-density isolated interface applications where multiple signal channels need isolation in a compact footprint. Operating temperature range is -55C to +110C.

The TLP290-4GB uses optical coupling for electrical isolation. (1) LED: When forward current flows through the internal GaAIAs infrared LED, it emits infrared light. (2) Phototransistor: The emitted light passes through the transparent isolation medium and illuminates the phototransistor base region, generating base current. (3) Amplification: The phototransistor amplifies the photocurrent, producing a collector current equal to the photocurrent multiplied by the transistor current gain. The CTR (Current Transfer Ratio) is the ratio of output collector current to input LED current. (4) Isolation: The optical path provides electrical isolation of 3750Vrms between input and output, with creepage and clearance designed for reinforced insulation.
