The IRS21864STRPBF from Infineon (formerly International Rectifier) is a high-voltage, high-speed gate driver IC with independent high-side and low-side referenced output channels in a SOIC-14 package. The proprietary HVIC and latch-immune CMOS technologies enable rugged monolithic construction. The floating high-side channel is designed for bootstrap operation and can drive an N-channel MOSFET or IGBT operating at up to 600V. The 4A peak output current (source and sink) provides fast gate charging and discharging for efficient switching of power devices. The logic inputs are compatible with standard CMOS or LSTTL outputs, down to 3.3V logic levels. The matched propagation delay of 170ns typical for both channels ensures symmetrical half-bridge operation. Undervoltage lockout (UVLO) on both channels prevents insufficient gate drive voltage during startup or supply brownout conditions. The high-side channel is tolerant to negative VS transients and dV/dt immune, ensuring reliable operation in noisy power conversion environments. The SOIC-14 version (IRS21864) provides a separate VSS logic ground pin for improved noise immunity, allowing the logic ground to be offset from the power ground by up to +/-5V.

The IRS21864STRPBF uses a level-shifting architecture to drive high-side and low-side power switches. (1) Low-Side Channel: The low-side driver is directly referenced to COM (power ground). When LIN goes high, the output LO drives the gate of the low-side switch to VCC through the output buffer. (2) High-Side Channel: The high-side driver is referenced to the floating VS node (the switch node of the half-bridge). When HIN goes high, a short pulse is generated and level-shifted across the high-voltage isolation barrier to set the latch that drives HO high. The bootstrap capacitor between VB and VS provides the floating supply for the high-side driver. (3) Bootstrap Operation: The bootstrap capacitor is charged from VCC through the bootstrap diode when VS is low (low-side switch on). When the high-side switch turns on, VS rises to the bus voltage, and the bootstrap capacitor provides the gate drive voltage (VB – VS) for the high-side switch. (4) UVLO: Both channels have undervoltage lockout that disables the output when the respective supply voltage (VCC for low-side, VB-VS for high-side) falls below the threshold (8.9V typical), preventing partial gate drive that could cause excessive power dissipation in the switch.
