The IR2181STRPBF from Infineon (formerly International Rectifier) is a 600V half-bridge gate driver IC in a DIP-8 through-hole package. The device provides independent high-side (HO) and low-side (LO) gate drive outputs, each capable of sourcing and sinking 2A peak current. The high-side output floats up to 600V above the COM (ground) reference, enabling direct gate drive of the high-side N-channel MOSFET or IGBT in a half-bridge configuration. The bootstrap power supply technique uses an external bootstrap capacitor charged through the integrated bootstrap diode during the low-side on-time, eliminating the need for an isolated power supply. The independent HIN and LIN logic inputs allow non-overlapping control or complementary PWM drive from the MCU. Both high-side and low-side drivers include under-voltage lockout (UVLO) that disables the output when the supply voltage is insufficient, preventing incomplete gate enhancement. The 180ns matched propagation delay and 70ns/35ns typical rise/fall times support switching frequencies up to several hundred kHz.

The IR2181STRPBF uses level-shifting and bootstrap techniques for half-bridge gate drive. (1) Low-Side Driver: The LIN input controls the LO output through a CMOS buffer stage. When LIN is high, LO drives the low-side MOSFET gate to VCC. When LIN is low, LO pulls the gate to COM. UVLO disables LO if VCC drops below ~8.6V. (2) High-Side Driver: The HIN input is level-shifted from the logic ground reference to the floating VS reference using a pulse-triggered level-shift circuit. When HIN goes high, a set pulse is sent through the level-shift to the high-side latch, turning on HO. When HIN goes low, a reset pulse turns off HO. (3) Bootstrap: The VB pin provides the floating supply for the high-side driver. During low-side on-time, the bootstrap capacitor charges from VCC through the bootstrap diode. During high-side on-time, the bootstrap capacitor supplies the gate charge current to the high-side MOSFET. (4) Dead Time: The independent HIN/LIN inputs allow the MCU to implement dead time control, ensuring both MOSFETs are never on simultaneously.
