The TL494CN from Texas Instruments is the industry-standard voltage-mode PWM controller used in millions of PC power supplies worldwide. It contains all the building blocks for a switching power supply: an oscillator with frequency set by RT and CT, two error amplifiers for voltage and current feedback, an adjustable dead-time control comparator, a pulse-steering flip-flop for push-pull operation, and two totem-pole output transistors rated at 200mA each. The output configuration pin (pin 13) selects between push-pull (two alternating outputs) and single-ended (parallel outputs). The dead-time control pin (pin 4) provides 0-45% dead-time adjustment, essential for push-pull and half-bridge converters to prevent shoot-through. The internal 5V reference powers the error amplifiers and can supply external circuits. The TL494 has been the backbone of ATX power supply design since the 1990s.

The TL494 oscillator generates a sawtooth waveform at the CT pin with frequency determined by RT and CT values (f = 1/(RT x CT)). This sawtooth is compared against three signals in the PWM comparator: the dead-time control voltage (pin 4), the output of error amplifier 1, and the output of error amplifier 2. The PWM comparator outputs a pulse whose width is determined by the lowest of these three control signals. In push-pull mode, the pulse-steering flip-flop alternates the output between the two output transistors (Q1 and Q2) on each oscillator cycle, producing a 50% maximum duty cycle per output. In single-ended mode, both outputs switch in parallel for up to 100% duty cycle. The dead-time control adds a minimum off-time that prevents both output transistors from being on simultaneously in push-pull configurations, ensuring safe operation of the external power switches.
