The X suffix denotes the top-adjustment style with J-lead termination, -2 indicates the rotational stop version (prevents over-rotation beyond the resistive element), 104 is the resistance code (10 x 10^4 = 100kOhm), and E indicates tape and reel packaging (2500 units per 7-inch reel). The cermet (ceramic-metal) resistive element provides good stability over temperature (+/-250 ppm/C) and time, with a power rating of 0.1W at 70C. The -2 rotational stop is preferred in production environments because it prevents the wiper from being driven beyond the resistive track, which could damage the element or create an open circuit. The top-adjustment configuration allows access from the component side of the PCB, making it suitable for post-assembly calibration. The 3mm footprint is the EIA/EIAJ standard, enabling compatibility with automated pick-and-place equipment and the Bourns H-90 adjustment tool. The essentially infinite resolution of the cermet element allows fine voltage adjustments.
The TC33X-2-104E is a three-terminal variable resistor using a cermet (ceramic-metal composite) resistive element deposited on a ceramic substrate. A wiper contact slides along the resistive track when the adjustment screw is rotated, changing the effective resistance between the wiper terminal and each end terminal. In voltage divider mode, the resistive element forms a divider from terminal 1 to terminal 3, with the wiper (terminal 2) tapping off a variable fraction of the applied voltage. The 270-degree mechanical rotation corresponds to the wiper traveling from one end of the resistive track to the other. The -2 rotational stop uses a mechanical clutch that prevents the wiper from being rotated beyond the end of the resistive element, unlike the -1 style which allows continuous rotation. The cermet element consists of metallic particles (typically ruthenium oxide) dispersed in a glass-ceramic matrix, providing a continuous resistive path with essentially infinite resolution (no discrete steps as in digital potentiometers). The +/-25% resistance tolerance reflects the inherent variation in cermet thick-film deposition, but the relative adjustment resolution is much finer.
