The SRN6045TA-2R2Y from Bourns is a semi-shielded SMD power inductor with 2.2 uH inductance and 4.4 A saturation current in a 6 x 6 x 4.5 mm package. The semi-shielded construction uses a magnetic epoxy coating over the wound coil, providing a balance between the EMI suppression of a fully shielded inductor and the lower DCR of an unshielded design. The 30.5 mOhm maximum DCR minimizes conduction losses in DC-DC converters. The 4.4A saturation current (defined as 30% inductance rolloff) and 4.0A thermal current (40C temperature rise) provide adequate margin for typical 2-3A DC-DC converter designs. The iron powder composite core material provides low core loss at high switching frequencies (500 kHz to 2 MHz). The 2R2Y suffix encodes the inductance (2.2 uH) and tolerance (Y = +/-20%).

The SRN6045TA-2R2Y stores energy in its magnetic field during the ON-time of a DC-DC converter’s switching cycle and releases it during the OFF-time. The inductor consists of a copper winding around an iron powder composite core. The core material is composed of iron particles insulated from each other and pressed into a solid form, which distributes the magnetic flux throughout the core volume and reduces eddy current losses. The semi-shielding is achieved by coating the wound inductor with a magnetic epoxy compound that contains ferrite or iron powder particles. This coating provides a return path for a portion of the magnetic flux, reducing the external magnetic field by 10-20 dB compared to an unshielded inductor, while adding less than 20% to the DCR compared to a fully shielded drum-core design. The 2.2 uH inductance is determined by the number of turns, the core cross-sectional area, and the core permeability.
