The OPA2227U from Texas Instruments is a dual low-noise precision operational amplifier optimized for audio and instrumentation applications. The 3 nV/sqrt(Hz) voltage noise at 1 kHz is among the lowest available for bipolar input op amps, making it ideal for low-source-impedance signal chains. The +/-10 uV maximum offset voltage (A grade) and 0.1 uV/C typical drift eliminate the need for external trimming. The 114 dB minimum CMRR and 120 dB minimum open-loop gain ensure accurate signal processing in precision differential circuits. Note that the OPA2227 is de-compensated and requires a minimum closed-loop gain of 5 for stability; for unity-gain applications, use the OPA2228 (identical except for compensation).

The OPA2227U uses a super-beta bipolar input stage with bias-current cancellation to achieve both low voltage noise (3 nV/sqrt(Hz)) and relatively low input bias current. The super-beta transistors have a current gain (beta) approximately 10x higher than standard NPN transistors, reducing the base current and therefore the input bias current. The bias-current cancellation circuit uses a current mirror to inject a compensating current that cancels the base current of the input transistors. The de-compensated architecture reduces the internal compensation capacitor compared to a unity-gain-stable design, providing higher bandwidth (8 MHz GBW) and faster slew rate (2.5 V/us) at the cost of requiring a minimum gain of 5 for stability. The low voltage noise is achieved through careful optimization of the input pair collector current and transistor geometry. The output stage uses a class AB push-pull configuration capable of driving 600 Ohm loads with low distortion.
