The MBRS540T3G from onsemi is a 5A 40V Schottky barrier rectifier in an SMB surface mount package. The low 0.50V maximum forward voltage at 5A significantly reduces conduction losses compared to standard silicon rectifiers (typically 1.0V), improving power supply efficiency. The 40V reverse voltage rating covers 12V automotive systems with adequate margin. The 150A peak surge current rating provides robust transient withstand capability. The guard ring structure protects against voltage transients. The T3G suffix indicates AEC-Q101 automotive qualification and tape-and-reel packaging. The SMB package provides good thermal performance with a junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of approximately 50 K/W on a standard PCB.

The MBRS540T3G uses a metal-silicon (Schottky) junction formed between a metal anode and an N-type silicon epitaxial layer. The Schottky junction is a majority-carrier device where only electrons flow from the semiconductor to the metal, eliminating minority carrier storage. This results in near-zero reverse recovery time and the low 0.50V forward voltage drop. The guard ring is a P-type diffusion around the active Schottky area that acts as a voltage clamp during reverse bias, preventing edge breakdown and improving reliability. The 1.0 mA reverse leakage at rated voltage is higher than P-N junction diodes due to the lower barrier height, which is the inherent trade-off for low forward voltage. The device is constructed with a proprietary barrier metal that balances forward voltage and leakage current.
