The MOC3021S-TA1 from onsemi is a zero-crossing triac driver optocoupler designed for controlling AC power loads through an external power triac. The integrated zero-crossing detector ensures the external triac is triggered only when the AC line voltage crosses zero, dramatically reducing the inrush current and electromagnetic interference (EMI) compared to random-phase triggering. The 400V blocking voltage supports 240VAC line operation with margin. The 15mA maximum LED trigger current is easily driven from a microcontroller GPIO through a current-limiting resistor. The 5300Vrms isolation voltage provides safe separation between the low-voltage control circuit and the high-voltage AC line. The DIP-6 package is easy to handle and provides adequate creepage for 240VAC applications. The -TA1 suffix indicates onsemi’s specific ordering code.

The MOC3021S-TA1 contains an infrared LED optically coupled to a zero-crossing photo-triac detector. When LED current flows (IF > IFT = 15 mA), the LED emits infrared photons that illuminate the photo-triac die. The photo-triac has two anti-parallel thyristor structures that can conduct AC current. The zero-crossing detector circuit inhibits the photo-triac from turning on when the AC line voltage is above the inhibit threshold (10V). The triac can only be triggered when the line voltage is within +/-10V of zero, which occurs twice per AC cycle (100 or 120 times per second for 50/60 Hz). This zero-crossing triggering ensures the external power triac turns on at the voltage zero-crossing, producing a gradual current ramp-up rather than a sudden step, which reduces EMI and thermal stress on the load. The external power triac is driven by the photo-triac output current (up to 100mA RMS), which is sufficient to trigger most medium-current power triacs.
