The M24256-BWMN6TP from STMicroelectronics is a 256-Kbit (32 KB) electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) with an I2C serial interface in an SO-8 surface-mount package. The device supports I2C Fast-mode Plus at up to 1 MHz, providing fast data throughput for parameter storage and configuration data management. The 64-byte page write mode allows writing up to 64 bytes in a single 4 ms write cycle, significantly improving write throughput for bulk data operations. The EEPROM achieves 4 million write cycle endurance per byte and 200-year data retention at 85°C, ensuring long-term reliability for critical configuration data. The device includes a separate 512-bit identification page that can be permanently locked for secure board-level serialization and tracking. A hardware write-protect (WP) pin prevents accidental overwriting of the entire memory array. The wide 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range supports direct connection to both low-voltage and 5 V systems.

The M24256-BWMN6TP uses a floating-gate EEPROM cell array organized as 32,768 x 8 bits. Each cell stores one bit of data as charge on a floating polysilicon gate embedded in the gate oxide of a selection transistor. During a write operation, a high-voltage charge pump generates the programming voltage that injects electrons onto the floating gate through Fowler-Nordheim tunneling, changing the cell threshold voltage. During erase, the voltage polarity is reversed to remove electrons from the floating gate. The I2C interface provides address-based random access to any byte in the memory array. For page writes, up to 64 consecutive bytes can be loaded into the page buffer and written to the array in a single 4 ms programming cycle. The write-protect (WP) pin, when tied to VCC, disables all write operations to the main memory array. The identification page is a separate 64-byte area that can be written and then permanently locked by setting a specific lock bit, after which no further writes are possible.
