The LM337T from Texas Instruments is the negative-output complement to the LM317T adjustable positive regulator. It provides an adjustable output voltage from -1.2V to -37V at up to 1.5A, set by just two external resistors. Combined with an LM317T, it creates a complete dual-tracking or independent +/- adjustable power supply for op-amps, audio circuits, and analog systems. The LM337T uses the same adjustment mechanism as the LM317T: the output voltage is VOUT = -1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2, where IADJ is approximately 50uA. The 77dB ripple rejection ensures clean negative rails for sensitive analog circuits. Internal protection includes thermal shutdown and current limiting. The TO-220 package tab is connected to the adjustment pin (not to the output), requiring an insulating washer when mounted to a heatsink at a different potential.

The LM337T maintains -1.25V between the ADJ (adjust) pin and the VOUT (output) pin. The output voltage is set by a resistor divider from VOUT to ADJ to GND: R1 between VOUT and ADJ (typically 120 Ohm), and R2 between ADJ and ground. The current through R1 is I = 1.25V/R1 = 1.25/120 = 10.4mA, which is well above the ADJ pin bias current of 50uA, ensuring the divider dominates the output voltage. The output voltage is VOUT = -(1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2). For a -15V output: R2 = (15/1.25 – 1) x 120 = 7 x 120 = 840 Ohm (use 845 Ohm standard). The 3V dropout means the input must be at least 3V more negative than the output (e.g., -18V input for -15V output at 1A). The thermal protection disables the output when the junction exceeds 125C.
