The ENC28J60-I/SS from Microchip Technology is a standalone 10 Mbps Ethernet controller that provides a complete Ethernet interface for microcontrollers lacking an integrated MAC. The device integrates both the MAC (Media Access Controller) and 10Base-T PHY (Physical Layer Transceiver) in a single chip, requiring only an external Ethernet magnetics (RJ-45 with built-in transformer) and a few passive components. The SPI host interface (up to 20 MHz) provides a simple 4-wire connection to any microcontroller. The 8 KB dual-port SRAM buffer allows the host MCU to read/write Ethernet packets while the controller processes the next frame. Hardware features include automatic polarity correction, programmable packet filtering, CRC generation/checking, and loopback mode for testing. The device is widely used in Arduino Ethernet shields and embedded IoT projects.

The ENC28J60-I/SS operates as a SPI peripheral where the host MCU reads and writes internal control registers and buffer memory through the SPI interface. For transmission, the MCU writes the Ethernet frame data into the TX buffer area of the 8 KB SRAM, sets the TX control registers, and triggers transmission. The MAC layer adds the preamble and start-of-frame delimiter, computes and appends the CRC, and passes the frame to the PHY layer for 10Base-T Manchester encoding and transmission on the twisted-pair cable. For reception, the PHY decodes incoming Manchester-encoded data, the MAC verifies the preamble and CRC, applies programmable packet filters (unicast, multicast, broadcast, pattern match), and stores valid frames in the RX buffer area. The MCU is notified via an interrupt pin (INT) when a packet is received. The 8 KB SRAM is divided between TX and RX buffers with configurable boundaries. The two LED pins can be configured to indicate link status and network activity.
