The ATSAMD21E17A-MU from Microchip Technology is a low-power ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller operating at up to 48 MHz with 128 KB Flash and 16 KB SRAM. The device features a USB 2.0 full-speed device interface with embedded PHY, four configurable SERCOM modules that can each operate as UART, SPI, or I2C, a 10-bit ADC with up to 350 ksps, and a 10-bit DAC. The event system enables direct peripheral-to-peripheral communication without CPU intervention, and the DMA controller supports autonomous data transfers. Internal RC oscillators (32 kHz and 48 MHz) eliminate the need for external crystals in many applications. The ATSAMD21 is the chip used in Arduino Zero and many Adafruit Feather boards.

The ATSAMD21E17A-MU uses the ARM Cortex-M0+ core, a 2-stage pipeline processor optimized for low power and deterministic interrupt handling. The Nested Vectored Interrupt Controller (NVIC) supports up to 32 interrupt channels with 4 priority levels. The SERCOM (Serial Communication Interface) modules are flexible peripherals that can each be independently configured as USART, SPI (master/slave), or I2C (master/slave), allowing the four modules to provide any combination of serial interfaces. The event system is a 12-channel routing network that allows peripherals to trigger actions in other peripherals (e.g., ADC conversion triggered by TC overflow) without CPU involvement. The DMA controller provides 12 channels for memory-to-peripheral and peripheral-to-memory transfers, reducing CPU overhead for data-intensive operations. The USB controller handles the full USB 2.0 FS protocol in hardware, including CRC generation, NRZI encoding, and endpoint management, requiring only minimal CPU intervention for setup and data transfer.
