The ADM2587EBRWZ from Analog Devices is a fully isolated RS-485/RS-422 transceiver that integrates the transceiver, digital isolator, and isolated power into a single SOIC-20W package. Using ADI’s iCoupler technology, it provides 2.5kV RMS galvanic isolation between the logic and bus sides without requiring external optocouplers, transformers, or DC-DC converters. The internal isolated DC-DC converter generates the bus-side 5V supply from the logic-side 3.3V or 5V input. The RS-485 transceiver supports half-duplex communication at up to 500kbps. The +/-15kV ESD protection and >25kV/us common-mode transient immunity ensure robust operation in harsh industrial environments. The device is ideal for applications requiring ground loop elimination and high-voltage isolation, such as Modbus networks, motor drives, and medical equipment.

The ADM2587E uses ADI’s iCoupler technology, which replaces traditional optocouplers with micro-transformers fabricated on a single chip. High-speed digital signals are modulated, transmitted across the isolation barrier via the transformers, and demodulated on the other side. The internal DC-DC converter uses a similar transformer-based approach to generate the isolated bus-side 5V supply (VISO) from the logic-side VDD. The RS-485 transceiver on the bus side converts between the differential RS-485 bus signals and the isolated digital signals. When the driver is enabled, the TXD signal is transmitted across the isolation barrier and drives the A and B bus outputs differentially. When the receiver is enabled, the differential A/B signals are converted to a single-ended digital signal and transmitted back across the isolation barrier to RXD. The 2.5kV isolation rating ensures safety and eliminates ground loops between system nodes.
