The 74HC14N from Texas Instruments contains six independent Schmitt-trigger inverter gates in a 14-PDIP package. Unlike a standard inverter (74HC04), the Schmitt-trigger input has hysteresis: the threshold for LOW-to-HIGH transition is higher than for HIGH-to-LOW transition, creating a noise margin between the two levels. This hysteresis makes the 74HC14 ideal for cleaning up noisy, slowly-changing, or bouncing signals. A single 74HC14 channel with a feedback resistor and capacitor forms a simple RC oscillator. The hysteresis ensures clean oscillation without the multiple-transition problems of standard inverters. Six channels per package provide ample resources for multiple signal conditioning tasks in one design. The 74HC14 is one of the most useful logic ICs for mixed-signal and interface design.

Each Schmitt-trigger inverter in the 74HC14N has two threshold voltages: a positive-going threshold (VT+) and a negative-going threshold (VT-), with the difference being the hysteresis voltage (approximately 0.8V at 4.5V supply). When the input rises past VT+, the output switches LOW. When the input falls past VT-, the output switches HIGH. Input signals that slowly cross the threshold or have noise superimposed will not cause multiple output transitions because the input must cross both VT+ and VT- to toggle the output. For RC oscillator construction, a resistor connects from the output back to the input, and a capacitor from the input to ground. The capacitor charges through the resistor until VT+ is reached, the output switches, and the capacitor discharges through the resistor until VT- is reached, and the cycle repeats.
