The KA5L0380RYDTU is a member of the Fairchild KA5X03XX series of Power Switches that combine a pulse width modulation controller and an 800V avalanche-rugged SenseFET into a single TO-220F-4 package. This integration minimizes external component count and simplifies off-line SMPS design. The device operates at a fixed 50kHz switching frequency and features under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), and internal thermal shutdown. The start-up current is typically 100µA, reducing start-up resistor power dissipation. The device enters auto-restart mode during fault conditions, providing robust protection for the power supply and load.

The KA5L0380RYDTU uses a current-mode PWM control architecture. The internal oscillator generates a fixed 50kHz clock that sets the switching frequency. The FB pin receives feedback current from an optocoupler on the secondary side, which controls the duty cycle of the integrated SenseFET. The peak drain current is limited on a pulse-by-pulse basis through an internal current sense comparator with a threshold of approximately 200mV. When Vcc drops below the UVLO stop threshold (9V), the device stops switching. When Vcc exceeds the OVP threshold (minimum 25V), the device enters auto-restart mode. Internal thermal shutdown activates when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 160°C, disabling switching until the temperature drops to a safe level.
