The DS3234SN#T&R from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) is a low-cost, extremely accurate SPI bus real-time clock with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. The integration of the crystal resonator enhances long-term accuracy and reduces component count. The device includes 256 bytes of battery-backed SRAM, two programmable time-of-day alarms, a programmable square-wave output, and a digital temperature sensor with ±3°C accuracy. It is available in an industry-standard 300-mil, 20-pin SO package.

The DS3234 integrates a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) that continuously monitors the ambient temperature and adjusts the crystal load capacitance to maintain frequency accuracy. The digital temperature sensor periodically samples temperature and stores the value in a register. The RTC maintains seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information with automatic leap year correction up to 2099. The SPI interface (Mode 1 or 3, up to 4MHz) provides read/write access to time registers, control registers, and the 256-byte SRAM. When VCC drops below the power-fail threshold, the device automatically switches to battery backup.
