The AD5231BRUZ10-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a nonvolatile memory, digitally controlled potentiometer (DCP) with 1024-step resolution and 10kΩ terminal resistance. It performs the same electronic adjustment function as a mechanical potentiometer with enhanced resolution, solid-state reliability, and remote controllability. The AD5231 features versatile programming using a standard 3-wire SPI-compatible serial interface supporting 16 modes of operation, including scratchpad programming, EEMEM storing and restoring, linear increment/decrement, ±6 dB/step log taper adjustment, and wiper setting readback. The EEMEM stores the wiper setting and automatically transfers it to the RDAC register at power-on in 140μs. An additional 28 bytes of EEMEM are available for user-defined data such as look-up tables or system identification. The REEL7 suffix indicates Tape & Reel packaging.

The AD5231 operates as a digitally controlled resistor with three terminals: A, B, and W (wiper). The 1024-position RDAC register controls the wiper position, dividing the total resistance (10kΩ) between W-A and W-B. The SPI interface receives 24-bit command words consisting of an instruction byte and a data byte. The scratchpad register allows direct wiper position programming without affecting EEMEM. The EEMEM stores the desired wiper position permanently and restores it automatically at power-on. Increment/decrement commands move the wiper one step at a time without requiring full SPI data transfers. The ±6 dB commands double or halve the wiper setting for logarithmic adjustment. Write protection (WP) prevents accidental EEMEM modification, while the PR pin allows hardware EEMEM restore.
