The ADE7953ACPZ-RL from Analog Devices is a high-accuracy single-phase energy metering IC designed for residential and industrial metering applications. It provides active, reactive, and apparent energy measurement with less than 0.1% error over a 1000:1 dynamic range, meeting the accuracy requirements of IEC 62053 and equivalent standards. The device integrates two 24-bit Sigma-Delta ADCs for simultaneous voltage and current sampling at 8 kHz, along with digital signal processing for energy computation. It supports both shunt resistor and current transformer (CT) current sensing methods. The SPI interface provides register-based access to all measurement data, including instantaneous voltage, current, active power, reactive power, apparent power, and energy accumulation registers. Additional features include zero-crossing detection, voltage sag detection, and active power crest factor measurement.

The ADE7953 operates by continuously sampling the line voltage and load current through its two 24-bit Sigma-Delta ADCs. The voltage channel samples the scaled line voltage through a resistor divider network, while the current channel samples the voltage across a shunt resistor or the secondary output of a current transformer. The digitized samples are processed through a digital signal processing (DSP) engine that computes instantaneous active power (voltage × current), reactive power (using 90° phase-shifted voltage), and apparent power (RMS voltage × RMS current). Energy accumulation is performed by integrating the power values over time. The zero-crossing detection circuit monitors the voltage channel to identify line frequency cycles for period measurement and synchronized energy accumulation. The SPI interface allows an external MCU to read all computed values from internal registers and configure operating parameters such as gain, phase calibration, and interrupt masks.
