The CP2103-GMR from Silicon Labs is a highly integrated USB-to-UART bridge controller that provides a complete solution for adding USB connectivity to legacy UART-based devices. It integrates a USB 2.0 full-speed transceiver, USB controller, and UART interface in a single 28-pin QFN package with no external USB components required. The internal voltage regulator allows the device to be powered directly from the USB 5V bus. Four configurable GPIO pins can be used for modem control signals or general-purpose I/O. The internal EEPROM stores USB vendor ID (VID), product ID (PID), and other USB configuration parameters, allowing customization without external programming. Free virtual COM port (VCP) drivers are available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, enabling the device to appear as a standard serial port to application software. Note: This device is NRND; the CP2102N is the recommended replacement for new designs.

The CP2103 operates as a protocol bridge between USB and UART domains. On the USB side, the integrated USB transceiver connects directly to the USB bus via the D+ and D- pins. The USB controller handles all USB protocol-level operations including device enumeration, endpoint management, and data packet formatting. On the UART side, TXD and RXD pins provide asynchronous serial data transfer, while optional RTS, CTS, DTR, and DSR pins support hardware flow control. Data received from USB is buffered and converted to UART format with the configured baud rate, data bits, stop bits, and parity. Conversely, UART data is buffered and formatted into USB bulk transfers for upstream transmission. The internal EEPROM is programmed via a Silicon Labs host utility to store custom USB descriptors. The 4 GPIO pins can be individually configured as inputs or outputs and controlled through the VCP driver API. An internal oscillator eliminates the need for an external crystal.
