The KSZ8863RLLI from Microchip Technology is a highly integrated 3-port 10/100 Ethernet switch designed for embedded networking applications. It combines two 10/100 MAC/PHY transceiver ports with one MAC-only port (supporting MII/RMII interface to an external host processor or PHY), along with a 128KB frame buffer and store-and-forward switching fabric. The switch supports 802.1Q VLAN tagging, QoS with four priority queues per port, port mirroring, and broadcast storm protection. The MIIM, SPI, or I2C management interface enables configuration and status monitoring by an external host.

The KSZ8863RLLI operates as a store-and-forward Ethernet switch. (1) Incoming frames on any port are received by the respective MAC layer, where preamble and CRC are processed. The frame data is stored in the 128KB shared frame buffer while the switch fabric determines the output port(s) based on the destination MAC address lookup table. (2) The address learning engine automatically builds the MAC address table by observing source MAC addresses on incoming frames, enabling subsequent frames to be forwarded only to the correct output port. (3) The QoS engine classifies frames based on 802.1p priority tags, VLAN tags, or port-based rules, and places them into one of four priority queues per output port for differentiated service.
