The Zilog Z84C4310AEG is a member of the Z80 CMOS peripheral family, specifically the Z84C43 Serial Input/Output (SIO/3) controller. This device provides two independently programmable full-duplex serial communication channels with built-in baud rate generators, making it the serial communication backbone for Z80-based embedded systems. Operating at 10MHz clock frequency, the SIO/3 supports data rates up to 2Mbps across both asynchronous and synchronous communication protocols. The CMOS implementation provides low power consumption while maintaining full Z80 bus compatibility. Each channel supports asynchronous (with 1, 1.5, or 2 stop bits), byte-synchronous (mono-sync, bi-sync, SDLC/HDLC), and bit-synchronous modes. The Z84C4310AEG operates as a dual-channel serial communication controller on the Z80 bus. Each of the two serial channels (A and B) has independent transmit and receive logic with separate baud rate generators. In asynchronous mode, the transmitter adds start and stop bits to parallel data from the CPU, while the receiver strips these bits and checks for framing errors. In synchronous mode, the device handles bit-oriented (SDLC/HDLC) or byte-oriented (BISYNC) protocols with zero insertion/deletion and CRC generation/checking. The CPU accesses the SIO through a set of write registers (for configuration) and read registers (for status) per channel. The interrupt logic generates interrupts for conditions such as transmit buffer empty, receive character available, special receive conditions, and external/status changes, with automatic interrupt vectoring to reduce CPU response time.
