The UDZ5V6B-7 from Diodes Incorporated is a surface-mount precision Zener diode in the ultra-small SOD-323 (SC-76) package. The device features a nominal Zener voltage of 5.6V with a tight +/-2% tolerance (5.49V to 5.73V at IZT=5mA), making it suitable for precision voltage reference and regulation applications. The sharp breakdown characteristics and low 60 Ohm maximum dynamic impedance at 5mA ensure stable voltage regulation over varying load conditions. The 200mW power dissipation rating supports typical low-power biasing and reference applications. The low 1uA reverse leakage current at 2.5V provides good isolation below the breakdown threshold. The SOD-323 package is approximately half the footprint of the SOT-23, enabling high-density PCB designs.

The UDZ5V6B-7 is a Zener diode operating in the reverse breakdown region. (1) Reverse Breakdown: When the reverse voltage across the diode exceeds the Zener voltage (5.6V), the diode enters avalanche breakdown and conducts current while maintaining a nearly constant voltage across its terminals. The +/-2% tolerance ensures this voltage is predictable. (2) Dynamic Impedance: The 60 Ohm maximum Zener impedance represents the slope of the V-I curve at the operating point (5mA). Lower impedance means better voltage regulation against load current variations. (3) Knee Region: Below the knee current (0.5mA), the Zener voltage drops significantly below the rated value. The device should be operated above IZK for accurate regulation. (4) Power Limit: The 200mW maximum power dissipation limits the operating current to P/VZ = 200mW/5.6V = 35.7mA maximum at 25C ambient.
