The SN65HVD1781DR is designed to survive overvoltage faults such as direct shorts to power supplies, mis-wiring faults, connector failures, and cable crushes. The ±70V bus-pin fault protection far exceeds the ±12V common-mode range required by the RS-485 standard. The device combines a differential driver and differential receiver operating from a single 3.3V to 5V supply. It is pin-compatible with the industry-standard SN75176, making it a drop-in upgrade with significantly improved fault tolerance.

The SN65HVD1781 uses a differential signaling scheme where data is transmitted as a voltage difference between the A and B bus lines. The driver converts single-ended TXD input into differential bus signals, while the receiver converts differential bus signals back to single-ended RXD output. The ±70V fault protection is achieved through robust bus-pin circuitry that can withstand accidental connection to power supplies. The failsafe receiver biases the output high when the bus is open, shorted, or idle (all drivers off), preventing undefined output states. The 1/10 unit load design reduces bus loading to allow 320 transceivers on a single bus.
