The PCF85063AT/AY from NXP Semiconductors is an ultra-low-power CMOS real-time clock (RTC) and calendar that provides time and date information with automatic leap year correction up to 2099. The device consumes only 250 nA typical current from the backup supply, maximizing battery life in time-keeping applications. The wide 0.9 V to 5.5 V supply range and automatic switchover to backup battery ensure continuous operation during main power failures. An I2C interface running at up to 400 kHz provides fast communication with the host MCU. Alarm and timer functions generate interrupt outputs for scheduled wake-up events.

The PCF85063AT/AY uses an external 32.768 kHz quartz crystal connected to the OSCI and OSCO pins as its timebase. The oscillator output is divided down to 1 Hz to drive the time counter chain. Time and date registers track seconds through years with automatic day-of-week and leap year calculation. The I2C interface allows the host MCU to read and write time registers and configure alarm and control registers. The alarm function compares programmed alarm values with the current time registers and asserts the INT pin when a match occurs. The timer function provides periodic interrupts at configurable intervals. When the main supply (VDD) drops below the backup supply (VBACKUP), an internal switch automatically connects the backup battery to the oscillator and time counters, ensuring uninterrupted time-keeping. The 250 nA backup current is achieved by minimizing oscillator and divider circuit power consumption.
