The MP34DT06JTR from STMicroelectronics is a digital MEMS microphone with a PDM (Pulse Density Modulation) output interface. The device integrates a MEMS sensing element and a preamplifier with a sigma-delta modulator on a single chip. The 64 dB A-weighted SNR provides high-quality audio capture suitable for voice recognition and recording applications. The 130 dB SPL acoustic overload point handles loud environments without clipping. The PDM digital output is immune to analog interference from nearby RF and digital circuits, making it ideal for smartphone and tablet designs. The bottom-port configuration allows the acoustic opening to be on the PCB side, enabling clean industrial design. The 1.8V supply voltage and 550 uA current consumption are compatible with always-on voice-detection systems. The compact 3.0 x 1.8 x 0.9 mm package minimizes board area.

The MP34DT06JTR converts sound pressure to a digital PDM bitstream through three stages. First, the MEMS sensing element is a capacitive microphone consisting of a flexible diaphragm and a rigid backplate. Incoming sound pressure waves deflect the diaphragm, changing the capacitance between the diaphragm and backplate. Second, a charge amplifier converts this capacitance change to a voltage signal. Third, a sigma-delta modulator digitizes the analog voltage into a 1-bit PDM stream at the clock frequency (1.0-3.25 MHz). The PDM output is a high-frequency bitstream where the density of ‘1’ bits represents the instantaneous signal level. Decimation filtering in the host processor or codec converts the PDM stream to standard PCM audio (e.g., 48 kHz, 16-bit). The 64 dB SNR is determined by the MEMS transducer’s mechanical noise floor and the modulator’s quantization noise shaping. The 130 dB SPL acoustic overload corresponds to the point where THD reaches 1% as the diaphragm reaches maximum deflection.
