The AD8227ARZ-R7 from Analog Devices is a low-cost, low-power instrumentation amplifier with a single-resistor gain setting from 5 to 1000 in an SOIC-8 package. The R7 suffix indicates tape and reel packaging with 2500 units per reel. The minimum gain of 5 (compared to the AD620’s minimum gain of 1) allows the internal resistors to be optimized for lower power consumption (300uA typical supply current vs. AD620’s 1.3mA) and wider supply voltage range (single 3.4V to 36V vs. AD620’s +/-2.3V to +/-18V). The gain formula G = 5 + 80k/RG differs from the AD620’s G = 1 + 49.4k/RG, reflecting the different internal resistor values. The 50uV typical input offset voltage and 1.2nA typical input bias current provide precision performance for bridge and thermocouple applications. The 86dB minimum CMRR at G=5 is achieved through laser-trimmed internal resistors. The AD8227ARZ-R7 uses a three-op-amp instrumentation amplifier topology optimized for low power and wide supply range. The input stage consists of two amplifiers (A1, A2) with feedback through the internal 40kOhm resistors and the external gain resistor RG. The differential voltage across RG creates a current I = (V+IN – V-IN) / RG, which flows through the 40kOhm internal resistors, producing a preamplified differential voltage at the A1/A2 outputs. The gain is G = 5 + 80k/RG, where the minimum gain of 5 results from the internal resistor ratio when RG is infinite (open circuit). The output stage (A3) is a difference amplifier that converts the differential signal to a single-ended output. The internal thin-film resistors are laser-trimmed to achieve the 86dB minimum CMRR specification. The 300uA supply current is achieved by biasing the input and output amplifiers at lower currents than the AD620, trading bandwidth and slew rate for power savings. The input overvoltage protection uses internal ESD diodes that clamp the input voltage to the supply rails. When the input voltage exceeds the supply by more than a diode drop, current flows through the external 5kOhm resistors and the internal diodes to the supply, limiting the input current to safe levels. The wide 3.4V to 36V single-supply range allows operation from a single 5V or 24V supply without requiring a negative rail.
