The BUF634P from Texas Instruments (originally Burr-Brown) is a 250mA high-speed unity-gain open-loop buffer in an 8-pin PDIP through-hole package. The device is designed to be used inside the feedback loop of an op-amp to increase output current capability, eliminate thermal feedback, and improve capacitive load drive. In the low quiescent current mode (BW pin floating or connected to V- through a resistor), the BUF634 operates on 1.5mA with 30MHz bandwidth and 2000V/us slew rate. In the wide bandwidth mode (BW pin connected directly to V-), the quiescent current increases to 15mA but the bandwidth extends to 180MHz. The 250mA continuous output current and 2000V/us slew rate make the BUF634 ideal for driving heavy loads such as cables, transformers, and headphones while maintaining the precision of the driving op-amp. When placed inside the feedback loop of a precision op-amp, the op-amp’s error correction eliminates the BUF634’s 30mV typical input offset voltage, providing a composite amplifier with the op-amp’s precision and the BUF634’s output drive capability. The internal current limit and thermal shutdown protect the device from fault conditions. The P suffix indicates the 8-pin PDIP through-hole package.

The BUF634P is an open-loop unity-gain buffer with a complementary emitter-follower output stage. Unlike a closed-loop buffer, there is no internal feedback from output to input. The input signal drives the bases of complementary NPN and PNP transistors in a push-pull Class AB configuration. The output voltage follows the input voltage with a gain of approximately 0.99 (at light loads) due to the base-emitter voltage drops in the output stage. When used inside the feedback loop of an op-amp, the op-amp senses the buffer output (through its feedback network) and adjusts its own output to compensate for the buffer’s gain error and offset voltage, resulting in a composite amplifier with unity gain accuracy set by the op-amp. The BW pin controls the bias current of the output stage. When the BW pin is open (or connected to V- through a resistor), the output stage is biased at low current (1.5mA total), providing 30MHz bandwidth with Class AB operation that minimizes crossover distortion. When the BW pin is shorted to V-, the bias current increases to 15mA, widening the bandwidth to 180MHz by increasing the speed of the output stage. The 2000V/us slew rate is achieved by the large available current to charge the parasitic and load capacitances. The internal current limit operates by sensing the output current and reducing the drive to the output transistors when the current exceeds approximately 350mA (low Iq mode) or 550mA (wide BW mode). The thermal shutdown at 175C junction temperature disables the output stage to prevent damage.
